Schelde (river)

Japanese: スヘルデ[川]（英語表記）Schelde

A river originating in the plateau near Saint-Quentin in northern France, crossing northwestern Belgium, and emptying into the North Sea in the Netherlands. In French it is called the Escaut. It is 355 km long. Cities such as Antwerp, Ghent, Tournai, Valenciennes, and Lille have developed along the main river and its tributaries. There are many sandbars near the mouth of the river, making it difficult for ocean-going ships of over 65,000 deadweight tons to navigate. In the industrial areas of northern France upstream, barges of up to 1,350 tons can navigate, but between Antwerp and Péronne, only 600-ton barges can navigate, so it has little value as an inland waterway.

北フランスのサン･カンタン付近の台地に発して，ベルギー北西部を横切り，オランダで北海に注ぐ川。フランス語ではエスコーEscaut川。全長355km。本･支流に沿って，アントワープをはじめ，ヘント，トゥールネ，バランシエンヌ，リールなどの都市が発達。河口付近は砂州が多く，6万5000載貨重量トン以上の外航船の航行は困難である。上流の北フランス工業地帯では1350トンまでの艀（はしけ）が航行できるが，アントワープ～ペロンヌ間は600トン級に限られ，内陸水路としての価値は低い。
