CNN - Cable News Network, Inc.

An American television station or pay channel that broadcasts news 24 hours a day to the world. It is owned by a subsidiary of WarnerMedia, an AT&T subsidiary. It was founded in 1980 by Robert Edward "Ted" Turner (1938- ) as the world's first 24-hour news cable television station. Its headquarters are in Atlanta, Georgia. It uses satellites to broadcast live from the scene of political upheavals, wars, and major disasters such as the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), the Gulf War (1991), and the collapse of the Soviet Union (1991). Its speed and mobility have revolutionized the world of television news by "reporting news that is happening now, not news that has just happened." In addition to cable television operations in North America, CNN International (launched in 1985) broadcasts news to over 200 countries and regions around the world, with a viewership of approximately 370 million households. Its official website, CNN.com, provides news programs on the Internet. CNN achieved a single-year profit in 1985, and within a decade of its launch, it had grown into a news organization on par with the three major American networks (CBS, NBC, and ABC). Ted Turner was selected as Time magazine's "Man of the Year" in 1991, and CNN has produced famous news anchors such as Christiane Amanpour (1958-). CNN's success led to the launch of a number of broadcasting stations with similar business models, including CNBC (launched in 1989), which specializes in economic news, FOX News (launched in 1996), which specializes in news, and MSNBC (launched in 1996). CNN was originally a subsidiary of Turner Broadcasting System (TBS, Inc.), owned by Ted Turner, but was acquired by Time Warner Inc. in 1996, and in 2018, AT&T acquired Time Warner and brought it under its umbrella. In Japan, in 1982, the company partnered with TV Asahi's Nippon Cable Television (JCTV) to broadcast CNN programs.

世界へ24時間ニュースを流すアメリカのテレビ局、あるいはその有料チャンネル。AT&T傘下のワーナーメディアの子会社が所有する。1980年にテッド・ターナーRobert Edward "Ted" Turner（1938―　）が、世界で初めて24時間放送のニュース専門ケーブルテレビ局として創業した。本社はジョージア州アトランタ。ベルリンの壁崩壊（1989）、湾岸戦争（1991）、ソ連崩壊（1991）といった政変、戦争、大災害などを、現場から衛星を使って生中継する手法を採用。その速報・機動性で世界のテレビニュース界に「起きたニュースではなく、今起きつつあるニュースを伝える」という報道革命をもたらした。北米でのケーブルテレビ事業のほか、衛星テレビを使った国際チャンネルCNNインターナショナルCNN International（1985年開局）で世界200以上の国・地域にニュースを流し、視聴者は約3億7000万世帯に達している。インターネット上では公式サイトCNN.comでニュース番組を提供する。CNNは1985年に単年度黒字を達成し、発足後10年あまりでアメリカ3大ネットワーク（CBS、NBC、ABC）と肩を並べる報道機関に成長した。テッド・ターナーは1991年にアメリカ・タイム誌が選ぶ「マン・オブ・ザ・イヤー」に選出され、CNNはクリスティアン・アマンプールChristiane Amanpour（1958―　）ら名物キャスターを生んだ。CNNの成功で、経済ニュース専門のCNBC（1989年開局）、ニュース専門のFOX(フォックス)ニュース（1996年開局）、MSNBC（1996年開局）など、同様なビジネスモデルの放送局が相次いで誕生した。CNNは当初、テッド・ターナーがオーナーを務めるターナー・ブロードキャスティング・システムTBS,inc.の傘下企業であったが、1996年にタイム・ワーナーTime Warner Inc.に買収され、さらに2018年にはAT&Tがタイム・ワーナーを買収して傘下に収めた。日本では1982年、テレビ朝日系の日本ケーブルテレビジョン（JCTV）と提携し、CNNの番組を放送している。
