A perennial plant of the Malvaceae family native to China, cultivated for use as a paper paste ingredient or for decorative purposes. The stem is 1-2m tall. The leaves have long stalks and are palmately divided into 5-9 deep lobes. From summer to autumn, large flowers about 10cm in diameter appear in sparse spikes at the top of the stem. The flowers last for one day and are yellow. They are beautiful with a bright reddish purple eye in the center. There are many stamens and the style is blue-purple with five branches. The capsule is horn-shaped with five edges, has bristles, and becomes hard when ripe. The root swells to a spindle shape about 20cm long.
