The capital of the Abkhaz Autonomous Republic in northwest Georgia. A port city on the Black Sea about 160 km north-northwest of Batumi. The site of the ancient Greek colony of Dioscurias, it has flourished as a commercial port since ancient times. Industries include canned fruit, wine, tobacco, leather and shoemaking, and electrical appliances. It is connected to other ports on the Black Sea by rail and ship. Blessed with beautiful sandy coastlines and a warm subtropical climate, it has developed as a tourist and health resort, with many sanatoriums and accommodation facilities. It has a botanical garden, a pedagogical university, a subtropical agricultural research institute, and a clinical pathology and treatment research institute. Population: 120,000 (1991 estimate).
