He wrote the lyrics and composed the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya (Great Indonesia). Born in Jatinegara, east of Jakarta, he worked as a teacher and a reporter for the newspaper Sin Pow while devoting himself to writing lyrics and composing music. On October 28, 1928, at the second Indonesian Youth Congress in Jakarta, he played the song Indonesia Raya on the violin, which begins with "My motherland, Indonesia, the land where I was born and raised...", deeply affecting the attendees. On this day, the famous Youth Pledge was also adopted, announcing the birth of one homeland, race, and language, and the unity of the Indonesian people was held high.

インドネシア国歌《インドネシア･ラヤ(偉大なインドネシア)》の作詞･作曲者。ジャカルタ東部のジャティヌガラに生まれ，教師や《シン･ポウ》紙の記者として働くかたわら，作詞･作曲にいそしんだ。1928年10月28日，ジャカルタでの第2回インドネシア青年会議において，〈わが祖国インドネシア，わが生まれ育ちし大地……〉で始まる《インドネシア･ラヤ》という曲をバイオリンで演奏し，参会者に深い感銘を与えた。この日にはまた，一つの祖国と民族と言語の誕生を告げる有名な〈青年の誓い〉が採択されて，インドネシア民族の一体性が高く掲げられた。
