A general term for birds in the family Thinocoridae, order Charadriiformes. Also called sandpipers. Length 17-28 cm. There are two genera and four species in this family, which are distributed throughout South America, from the snow line of the Andes to the barren lands of the southern coast. At first glance, it resembles a sandpiper, with a stocky body, short legs, and long, pointed wings. Its beak is short and cone-shaped. The upper surface of the body is brown with light brown spots, and the throat is white, gray, or black. It lives on the ground and runs fast like a plover.

チドリ目ヒバリチドリ科Thinocoridaeの鳥の総称。タネシギとも呼ばれる。全長17～28cm。この科には2属4種があり，南アメリカに分布し，アンデス山脈の雪線から南部の海岸の荒地にまですむ。一見サケイに似た鳥で，ずんぐりした体をもち，脚は短く，翼は長くて先がとがっている。くちばしは短くて円錐形である。体の上面は褐色で淡褐色の斑があり，のどは白色，灰色，または黒色。地上に生活しチドリのように速く走る。
