Flavius Valens

Flavius Valens

Roman Emperor (reigned 364-378). Born in Pannonia. Valens was appointed co-emperor by his brother Valentinian I and was in charge of governing the eastern part of the empire, with Constantinople as its capital. He fought against the Visigoths from 367-369, and against the Persian army that had invaded Armenia from 369-377. In 376, Valens was allowed to cross the Danube and emigrate to Lower Moesia, after being chased by the Huns. However, contrary to his promise, Valens was treated coldly, so he took up arms and invaded Thrace in 377. The Visigoths were repelled once, but they attacked again the following year in 378. Valens did not wait for the arrival of Emperor Gratian, who ruled the western part of the empire, and on August 9 of that year, he launched an attack near Adrianople, where he was completely defeated and killed in battle. He was an ardent Arian and persecuted Orthodox Christians.
