Vimana (English spelling)

Vimana (English spelling)
The term refers to the main hall in Hindu and Jain temples in India. In many temples, a mandapa (prayer hall) and other facilities are connected to the front. Generally, a vimana is a sturdy stone structure built on a platform, with a garbhagriha (a room for placing the principal deity, or shrine) inside and a doorway at the front. In North Indian temples, a bullet-shaped shikhara (tall tower) rises on the roof of the garbhagriha. In South Indian temples, the roof is multi-layered and pyramidal, and the shikhara built on top is relatively small. Note that sometimes the term vimana refers only to the superstructure, and the entire main hall is called the garbhagriha.
