It is the language of the Khoi-Khoin people who live mainly in Namaland, Namibia, southwestern Africa, and is said to have 20,000 to 30,000 speakers. It belongs to the Khoi-San language family. Many people once lived in South Africa, but it is said that there are no pure Khoi-San people today. It can be broadly divided into language groups such as Nama (or Nama-na, the central tribe of the Khoi-Khoin), Kora (or Kora-na, although the pure Kora are said to be extinct), Gri (or Gri-qua, a mixture of Khoi-Khoin tribes), and Rehobotho (a mixture of Khoi-Khoin and Europeans), but it is said to be very similar to the dialects of the central group of San languages.
