In 1888, he gained fame with his long narrative poem Song of the Filial Daughter Shiragiku (The Song of the Filial Daughter Shiragiku), and in April 1893, he founded the Asakasha Company, where he gathered talented poets such as his younger brother Kaien Ayugai and Tekkan Yosano, laying the foundations of new-school waka poetry.
