[Died] 1708. Born in Moscow, Moldova, author, traveler, and scholar. His real name was Nicolae S. Milescu. He served as a mercenary captain under a local ruler, but after the failure of the palace revolution in 1668, he moved to Moscow, Russia in 1671 and served as an interpreter for the embassy under the name NG Spafarii. He was sent to Beijing as a Russian envoy from 1675 to 1678, but was unable to complete his mission due to disagreements over ceremonial issues. However, his travelogue is a valuable source of information about the situation in Siberia and China at the time. His report was translated into English by J. Badri in 1919 as "Russia, Mongolia, China."
