Megijima Island

Japanese: 女木島 - めぎじま
Megijima Island

An island in the Bisan Seto Strait, north of Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is also known as Onigashima (Demon Island) because of the legend of Momotaro. Together with Ogishima Island, it formed the village of Shiojima, but was incorporated into Takamatsu City in 1956 (Showa 31). Its area is 2.67 square kilometers. Its coastline is 8.9 kilometers long, its highest point is 216 meters, and there is little flat land. The granite base is about 150 meters high, and on top of that is tuff, agglomerate, and lava of Sanuki rock caused by volcanic activity. It is a plateau-like island, and like Yashima and Goshikidai, it is a mesa with a flat surface on the top. Near the 188-meter peak in the north, there is a cave where tuff was mined, and it is called the home of demons. Other interesting geological features include columnar joints and sea caves. Houses near the beach are surrounded by high stone walls called "Ote" to protect against strong sea breezes. Ferries are available from Takamatsu Port. Population 200 (2009).
