Kakumei (Practitioner)

… [Ueno Fukuo]
[faith]
Kiso Ontake was originally one of the Kunimitake (national mountain) scattered throughout Japan, where Zao Gongen was enshrined and where pilgrims climbed. In the mid-Edo period, two pilgrims, Kakumyo from Owari and Fukan from Edo, established the Kurosawaguchi and Otakiguchi trails, and while previously only those who had abstained for 75 days were allowed to climb the mountain, it became possible to do so with only light ascetic practices. After that, pilgrims from the lineage of Kakumyo and Fukan formed associations in various regions, and the mountain became popular nationwide.
