1844‐1903 Dutch clergyman, politician, and man of letters. He received his doctorate in theology in Rome, and after returning to the Netherlands in 1870, he became a professor at a seminary and participated in editing Catholic newspapers and magazines. He began his political activities in opposition to the secular elementary education law enacted by the Liberal Party cabinet, and after serving as a member of the House of Representatives (1880-1903), he organized the Catholic Party. In order to oppose the Liberal Party and the Socialist Party, he joined forces with a Protestant party and built the foundations of the left-wing coalition government that was in charge of Dutch politics from the early 20th century until 1940. He worked hard to promote social policies such as compulsory education and universal suffrage, and is also known as a poet. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
