1811‐96 American author. Born in Connecticut as the second daughter of Lyman Beecher, a strict Calvinist minister, she moved with her family to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1832, and in 1836 married Calvin E. Storr, a professor at the seminary where her father was principal. Cincinnati bordered the slave states of the South across the Ohio River, and her experiences there strengthened her antipathy toward slavery. Together with her husband, she also helped fugitive slaves. After moving to Maine in 1850, she wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. When the book was published in hardcover in 1852, it became an unprecedented bestseller, and it is even said to have been one of the driving forces behind the Civil War.
