An American reform movement that took place from the 1890s until World War I. It sought to reform through moderate legislative measures the widening gap between rich and poor, the rise of labor problems, and the unrest of the middle class due to industrial monopolies under a laissez-faire economy. T. Roosevelt Wilson and others were the promoters of this movement, and it strengthened antitrust laws, implemented a progressive income tax, gained women suffrage, and improved working conditions.
