A book on waka poetry from the Kamakura period. Written by Fujiwara no Teika. The colophon reads, "July 2, 1219, a certain person sent a reply," which is recognized as indicating the time of its creation. The content of the text suggests that the "certain person" to whom it was sent was a high-ranking waka disciple of Teika, but it is unclear who he was (it is said to be Minister of the Interior, Ieyoshi Kinugasa). The main point is that it divides waka poetry into ten categories, with the "Ushintei" category established as the center, which is one of the ten categories but also applies to all ten categories. The "Ushintei" category describes the depth of contemplation in composing poetry, and how this is expressed. The ideal form of completion is described separately from the ten categories as the "Excellent Category." It also describes various things to keep in mind when composing poetry. There are some who doubt that it was written by Teika, but the theory that it is genuine is the most likely.
