…In Serbia, under the Ottoman Empire, the tradition was preserved to a small extent in the monastery of Fruška Gora, but it was not until the end of the 17th century that Western influences were seen, and while following the iconography of the Eastern Orthodox Church, they also began to study Baroque. The first result was a fresco painted in 1737 by the Macedonian Hristifor Žefarović (?-1753) in the monastery of Bodjani, and its style is unique and reminiscent of the naive style, one of the characteristics of modern art. He seems to have also produced portraits, but for Serbian painters, the decoration of churches, especially the iconostasis, was the main task until the beginning of the 20th century. …
