Nisshin Shinjishi - Nisshin Shinjishi

Japanese:
Nisshin Shinjishi - Nisshin Shinjishi
A Japanese newspaper founded in Tokyo in March 1872 by the Englishman JR Black. The Portuguese da Rosa, who was fluent in Japanese, assisted in the editing. It was initially published every other day, but from April it was closed on the 1st and 6th of each month. At first it was a newspaper for the "Left House" that carried the proceedings, bills, and petitions of the Left House, but as it was run by foreigners with extraterritorial rights, it gradually became more critical of the government. In May 1873, it published financial opinions by Inoue Kaoru and Shibusawa Eiichi, and in January 1874, it was one of the first newspapers to publish a petition for the establishment of a popularly elected parliament by Itagaki Taisuke and others, and from that time on it became a representative newspaper for the civil rights movement. In January 1875, the government hired Black to the Left House on the condition that he give up running the newspaper, and in June it promulgated the Newspaper Ordinance, banning foreigners from running newspapers, and fired Black shortly thereafter. After Black withdrew from the magazine, Nisshin Shinjishi quickly lost its influence and ceased publication at the end of 1975 after the 265th issue.
