[Died] October 9, 1924. Beijing. China. The first literary scholar and translator from the late Qing to the Republic of China. Born in Minhou County, Fujian Province. His pen name was Qin Nan. His pen name was Leng Hongsheng. He was skilled in the classical Chinese of the Tongcheng school, and in 1893, he translated Alexandre Dumas's La Dame aux camélias under the title Paris Chahuanu Yishi (The Lady of the Camellias). He subsequently translated works by more than ten countries into classical Chinese, including those by William Shakespeare, Honoré de Balzac, Charles John Huffam Dickens, Henrik Johan Ibsen, and Tokutomi Roka. He himself could not read the original texts, so he wrote down the general outlines given to him by his collaborators in classical Chinese. Although his choice of works was inconsistent and he made many mistranslations, his achievement in introducing modern European literature to China is comparable to that of Yan Fu in the intellectual world. Later, when the spoken language movement arose during the literary revolution, he became a leading figure in the opposition. He also wrote many poems, novels, plays, and other works. 中国，清末から中華民国初の文学者，翻訳家。福建省閩侯県（びんこうけん）の人。字は琴南。筆名は冷紅生など。桐城派の古文をよくし，光緒19（1893）年アレクサンドル・デュマの『椿姫』La Dame aux caméliasを『巴黎茶花女遺事』の題名で翻訳して一躍有名になった。以後ウィリアム・シェークスピア，オノレ・ド・バルザック，チャールズ・ジョン・ハファム・ディケンズ，ヘンリック・ヨハン・イプセン，徳冨蘆花など十余国の文学作品を古文で翻訳した。自身は原文を読めず，協力者が伝える大筋を古文に書き下ろした。作品の選択はまちまちで誤訳も多いが，ヨーロッパ近代文学を中国に紹介した功績は，思想界における厳復の功績に匹敵する。のち，文学革命において口語運動が興ると，反対派の急先鋒となった。詩文，小説，戯曲などの創作も多い。（→中国文学）
