Greater omentum

Greater omentum
A part of the peritoneum that starts at the greater curvature of the stomach, in front of the transverse colon, and hangs down deeply like an apron on the inner surface of the anterior abdominal wall. In some parts it has a mesh-like shape, hence the name. Embryologically, there are two lobes, anterior and posterior. The anterior lobe forms the posterior gastric mesentery at the greater curvature of the stomach and hangs down behind the anterior abdominal wall, while the posterior lobe then folds back and faces upward to connect with the transverse colon. Omental tumors and omental hernias can rarely occur.
