Annan Kingdom - Annan Kingdom

...From the 16th century onwards, northern Vietnam, a producer of silk and pottery, was known in Japan and Europe as Annamite. In the 19th century, when Emperor Gia Long unified the whole country, the whole kingdom was called Annamite. However, in 1862, France seized southern Vietnam and made it a direct colony, calling it Cochinchina. In 1884, it established a protectorate over the north, calling it Tonkin. As a result, only the protectorate of central Vietnam was called Annamite, and in 1902 this name was legally established.
