Puntarenas (English spelling)

Japanese: プンタレナス(英語表記)Puntarenas
Puntarenas (English spelling)
A city in northwestern Costa Rica. Capital of the province of the same name. It is a port city overlooking the Gulf of Nicoya in the Pacific Ocean, about 80 km west of the capital, San José, and sits on a long, narrow sandbar jutting into the bay. During the Spanish colonial period, it prospered through trade with Panama and South America. In 1814, the port facilities were improved, and in the 1940s, a road was completed from San José, making it a shipping port for coffee bound for Europe. Later, a railway was opened between the capital and the city, and it gradually became important as a shipping port for coffee and bananas, and as an import port from the United States. It is also Costa Rica's main fishing port, and has a fish canning and freezing factory, a ship repair factory, and other facilities. There is an international airport nearby. Population: 37,837 (1991 estimate).
