The second son of Fatah Ali Shah, the second Shah of the Qajar dynasty. As the heir to the throne, he served as Governor-General of Azerbaijan Province. He was a progressive man, and taking advantage of the fact that Azerbaijan was the most advanced cultural region closest to the Ottoman Empire, Imperial Russia, and Europe, he began to work on modernization policies early on, especially European-style military reforms. However, he was defeated in two wars against Russia (1813, 1826-28) during his term as Governor-General. [Tsutomu Sakamoto]

カージャール朝の第2代シャーであるファトフ･アリー･シャーの次子。皇位継承者としてアゼルバイジャン州総督を務める。進取の気風に富み，アゼルバイジャンが，オスマン帝国，帝政ロシア，ヨーロッパにもっとも近い先進的文化地域であることを利用して，早くから近代化政策，とくにヨーロッパ的な軍制改革に取り組んだ。しかし，総督在任中の2度の対ロシア戦争(1813,1826‐28)では敗北した。【坂本勉】
