...Since 1902, registration of membership lists has been legally required. Originally, clubs were not open to women except as guests, but women's clubs such as Alexandria were established in 1883 and University Women's in 1887, and their numbers increased dramatically in the 20th century. British-style clubs spread to the continent from the 18th century, and in France in particular, they had a decisive influence on revolutionary politics.
