A town in central Myanmar, 46km north of Magway on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River. Population 26,000 (1966). Known as an oil producing area since the dynasty era, during the British colonial period the British-funded Burma Oil Company had a monopoly on oil mining. After independence it became a joint venture with the Burmese government, and was nationalized in 1963. A forest of steel derricks for oil wells stands on a hill about 5km from the town. As reserves have been depleted, the main focus of oil mining has shifted to Man on the opposite bank. [Ohno Toru] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
