Serbian king of the Middle Ages (1331-45), later emperor (1346-55). He ascended to the throne by murdering his father Stefan Dečanski. In response to the wishes of the nobles, he continued to fight in battles in an attempt to gain hegemony over the Balkans even after the destruction of the Byzantine Empire. Byzantine internal conflicts, the Ottoman Turkish conquest of Anatolia, and the latter's occupation of Gallipoli, allowed him to gain control of Albania, Macedonia (except Thessaloniki), Thessaly, and other areas, and in 1346 he proclaimed himself "Emperor of the Serbs and Greeks" in Skopje.

中世セルビア国王(在位1331‐45)，後に皇帝(在位1346‐55)。父ステファン･デチャンスキを殺害して王位に就く。貴族の要望にこたえ，ビザンティン帝国を滅ぼしてもバルカン半島で覇権を握ろうと転戦しつづけた。ビザンティン帝国の内紛，オスマン･トルコのアナトリア征服，後者のガリポリ占拠などが幸いしてアルバニア，マケドニア(テッサロニキを除く)，テッサリアなどを手中に収め，1346年スコピエにおいて〈セルビア人･ギリシア人の帝王〉を宣言した。
