1308‐55 Serbian king of the Middle Ages (1331-45), later emperor (1346-55). He ascended to the throne by murdering his father Stefan Dečanski. In response to the wishes of the nobles, he continued to fight in battles in an attempt to gain hegemony over the Balkans even after the destruction of the Byzantine Empire. Byzantine internal conflicts, the Ottoman Turkish conquest of Anatolia, and the latter's occupation of Gallipoli, allowed him to gain control of Albania, Macedonia (except Thessaloniki), Thessaly, and other areas, and in 1346 he proclaimed himself "Emperor of the Serbs and Greeks" in Skopje.
