A mining and industrial city in the Rostov Oblast in the southwest of the Russian Federation. Population 219,400 (2003 estimate). Formerly known as Aleksandrovsk-Grushevskiy (Александровск‐Грушевский/Aleksandrovsk-Grushevskiy) until 1920. Located on the steppes (short grass grassland) at the southeastern foot of the Donets Hills, the city is connected to Rostov-on-Don by rail. There are coal mines in the Donets coalfield, an ore-dressing plant, a coal mining technology institute, and a mining school.
