Dutch mathematician, physicist, and engineer. He worked at the city hall of his native Bruges, and later became Chief Accountant of the Dutch Army. He explained the theory of decimal fractions (1585) and worked to popularize it, established the law of composition of forces, clarified the conditions for equilibrium of forces, and discovered that the pressure inside a liquid is determined only by the depth from the liquid surface. He also made several technical inventions. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
