Goa (state) (English spelling)

A state in mid-west India facing the Arabian Sea. It is located at the southern end of the Konkan coast. In 1961, with the armed liberation of the country by the Indian government, it was annexed to the Republic of India along with the former Portuguese colonies of Daman, north of Bombay, and Diu, on the coast of the Kathmandu Peninsula, and both became direct territories of the government. In 1987, Goa alone became a state, while Daman and Diu remained as direct territories. Area 3,702 km2, population 1.17 million (1991). The state capital is Panjim (Panaji, New Goa).

インド中西部アラビア海に面する州。コンカンKonkan海岸の南端にある。1961年インド政府の武力解放により，ボンベイ北方のダマン，カーティアーワール半島海岸部のディウDiuの両旧ポルトガル領植民地とともにインド共和国に併合され，あわせて政府直轄地となる。87年ゴアのみで州になり，ダマン・ディウは直轄地として残った。面積3702km2，人口117万(1991)。州都はパンジムPanjim(パナジPanaji，新ゴア)。
