Goa (state) (English spelling)
A state in mid-west India facing the Arabian Sea. It is located at the southern end of the Konkan coast. In 1961, with the armed liberation of the country by the Indian government, it was annexed to the Republic of India along with the former Portuguese colonies of Daman, north of Bombay, and Diu, on the coast of the Kathmandu Peninsula, and both became direct territories of the government. In 1987, Goa alone became a state, while Daman and Diu remained as direct territories. Area 3,702 km2, population 1.17 million (1991). The state capital is Panjim (Panaji, New Goa).
