粗い麻織物を意味するオランダ語doekに由来。英語でダックduckとも。太い麻糸または綿糸で平織にした厚地の織物をいう。織目が密で丈夫なので，靴，かばん，帆布，テントなどにし防水加工することが多い。薄地のものはキャンバス地といい油絵用，刺繍(ししゅう)用布などにする。ダック芯(しん)は，麻に糊づけしたものや厚手の綿の芯のことで洋服の芯地にする。
