Takanobu Kano
Year of death: 4th August 30th, Genna (1618.10.18)
Year of birth: 11/25/1571 (12/11/1571)
A painter from the Momoyama period. Born in Kyoto as the second son of Kano Eitoku. His given name was Ukon, later Ukon no Shogen. It is said that he married the daughter of Sassa Narimasa, a vassal of Oda Nobunaga. After the death of his elder brother Mitsunobu, he became the center of the Kano school, and played an active role as the commander in chief during the construction of the Imperial Palace in 1613 (Keicho 18). The "Kensho Shoji" that he painted on this occasion has been preserved at Ninna-ji Temple and is considered a standard work. In recent years, Takanobu's works have been excavated in various places, and in addition to the splendor of Mitsunobu's style, they show powerful brushwork, suggesting that he was a painter who prepared the basic line quality for the Tan'yu style. His grave is at Myokaku-ji Temple in Kyoto, and his posthumous Buddhist name is Endaiin Takanobu Nichiyo.
