His critiques, collected in five volumes of Variété (1924-44) and elsewhere, cover a wide range of topics, including an argument for conscious literary production, an analysis of the mechanics of poetry, a theory of painting, and a critique of civilization that worries about the future of Europe. As an expression of rigorous thought in a clear and elegant style, they are considered to be the monumental works of critical literature in the first half of the 20th century.
