He lectured throughout Europe as if he were the official intellectual representative of France. His critiques, collected in five volumes of Variété (1924-44) and elsewhere, cover a wide range of topics, including an argument for conscious literary production, an analysis of the mechanics of poetry, a theory of painting, and a critique of civilization that worries about the future of Europe. As an expression of rigorous thought in a clear and elegant style, they are considered to be the monumental works of critical literature in the first half of the 20th century. However, contrary to his reputation as an intellectual poet, he experienced a serious love affair around 1920, and after that, contrary to his youthful determination, he made it his inner task to delve into the unity of spirit and eros and achieve complete self-fulfillment. …
