Ananajako - Ananajako

Japanese: アナジャコ - あなじゃこ
Ananajako - Ananajako

A shrimp-like marine animal belonging to the family Thalassinidae, order Decapoda, class Crustacea. Taxonomically, it is classified as a hermit crab in the broad sense. It is commonly found in inland bays from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is also distributed in the Korean Peninsula and northern China. It is about 10 cm long, with a pointed cephalothorax and bulging gill areas on both sides. Its abdomen is wide, and at first glance it resembles a mantis shrimp. The first thoracic leg forms an extremely incomplete pair of claws. It lives in a hole about 2.5 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep in slightly hard sand and mud from the intertidal zone to a depth of about 20 meters. The peak spawning season is from early May to mid-June. It is not eaten, but in Tokyo Bay, the Seto Inland Sea, the Ariake Sea, and other places where it is abundant, it is used as bait for fishing for red sea bream and black porgy.
