The southernmost and largest island of the Chagos Archipelago, which lies almost in the center of the Indian Ocean. It has an area of 36 km2. It is a coral reef island that developed on the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge, so it has a low and flat terrain, with the highest point only 25 meters above sea level. Because of its strategic importance to the Indian Ocean, especially the oil-producing areas of the Persian Gulf, it was incorporated into the British Indian Ocean Territory in 1965. In 1972, 1,400 Mauritians who had been living on the island were repatriated to Mauritius to make way for the construction of British and American military bases, and the base personnel are currently stationed on the island.
