Today, the term is widely used in two senses in international finance. (1) It refers to a clean letter of credit that is not intended for the settlement of international trade transactions, but promises to provide loans or guarantees in financial transactions. For example, when an overseas branch or local subsidiary of a Japanese company obtains a loan or guarantee from a local bank in a foreign country, the Japanese company asks its bank to issue a letter of credit with the local bank as the beneficiary to guarantee the debt. If the debtor defaults on its debt, the local bank will issue a sight bill based on the letter of credit and request payment from the letter of credit issuing bank.
