Japanese: ケナガイタチ - けながいたち（英語表記）polecat

Also known as the European polecat. A mammal of the carnivora family Mustelidae, it closely resembles a weasel, but has long, dark brown fur and a black-brown tail. It lives in the forests of Europe. Males are 35-46cm long, with a tail length of 11-15cm and weighing about 1kg. Females are much smaller, with a body length of less than 34cm. Their supercilium is much longer than that of a weasel and is shiny dark brown to blackish brown, allowing the light yellowish brown undercoat to show through. The tip of the snout, cheeks and edges of the ears are white, and the limbs and tail are blackish brown. They live alone in shrubs and broadleaf forests, are nocturnal, live on the ground, and feed mainly on mice and rabbits, but also kill poultry.

ヨーロッパケナガイタチともいう。イタチに酷似するが，毛が長く暗褐色で，尾が黒褐色の食肉目イタチ科の哺乳類。ヨーロッパの森林にすむ。雄は体長35～46cm，尾長11～15cm，体重1kgくらい。雌ははるかに小さく体長34cm以下。上毛はイタチよりもはるかに長く，光沢がある暗褐色～黒褐色で，淡黄褐色の下毛が透けて見える。吻端（ふんたん），ほお，耳介の縁は白色，四肢と尾は黒褐色。低木林や広葉樹林に単独ですみ，夜行性，地上生で，ネズミ，ウサギを主食とし，家禽（かきん）も殺す。
