A type of pagoda. A style of building with a cylindrical tower body topped with a treasure-shaped roof and a mokoshi (garland) around it. A circular tower body part is also called a daito (large tower). The white lacquered part of the upper part of the tower body is called the kamebara (turtle belly). This type of architecture appeared after esoteric Buddhism was introduced by Saicho and Kukai during the Heian period. In the Tendai sect, the Lotus Sutra (Hokekyo) was originally considered to be the relic of the law, and a Tahoto (large tower) was built to enshrine the Five Buddhas of the Womb Realm, while in the Shingon sect, a Tahoto (large tower) was built to enshrine Dainichi Nyorai (Vairocana). There are two theories about the origin of the name Tahoto: one is that it comes from a multi-story pagoda, and the other is that it refers to a tower in which two Buddhas, Taho Nyorai and Shaka Nyorai, sit side by side, as described in the Kenhotohon chapter of the Lotus Sutra. The latter tower can be seen in a copperplate Lotus Sutra set of four Buddhas in the Hasedera Temple in Nara Prefecture. It was made in 686 (Shucho 1), and in the center, a Tahoto tower with Taho and Shaka seated side by side is carved in relief as a three-story hexagonal pagoda. The former, so-called Tahoto, enshrines Dainichi Nyorai as its principal image, and is therefore clearly different from the latter Tahoto. The oldest Tahoto that still exists is the Ishiyama-dera Tahoto in Shiga Prefecture (national treasure, Kamakura period), and only the Shiten pillars stand inside. An old Tahoto in the large tower style is the Negoro-ji Daito in Wakayama Prefecture (national treasure, Muromachi period).
