Born: July 26, 1815. [Died] August 29, 1865. German zoologist. He studied medicine at the University of Berlin under J. Müller, and became a professor at the same university in 1859. He discovered cell division in embryonic blood cells (1841) and confirmed that cell proliferation occurs through cell division (52). He also studied the development of vertebrates, and in 1842 revealed that the early embryo consists of three parts: endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm. He also discovered non-spinal nerves (38) and ganglia in the heart (44), among other accomplishments.
