The capital of Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa. Population: 690,000 (1993). Located in the arid central part of the country, it is the terminus of the railway from Bijan, Côte d'Ivoire, on the Gulf of Guinea, and is a key transportation and communication hub, including roads and international air routes. It is also the country's center in terms of education and tourism, but is said to be economically inferior to Bobo-Dioulasso in the southwest of the country. This is because the surrounding arid areas only produce a limited number of agricultural products, such as groundnuts. The city's small industry is the distribution and processing of these agricultural products. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
