The capital of the eponymous province in central Bulgaria. It is located at the southern foot of the Stara Planina mountain range, 230 km east of Sofia. It has a population of 150,000 (1996). It is a key railway hub connecting Ruse, Burgas, Plovdiv, and Sofia, and also has an airport. It is the center of the rose-growing region, and rose oil has been produced there since ancient times. There are factories producing textiles, chemical fertilizers, metallurgy, machinery, electricity, vegetable canning, beer, lumber, and furniture. The city has ancient origins; the Roman Emperor Trajan named it Augusta Trajana, but it fell into decline for a time in late antiquity. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
