Stara Zagora

The capital of the eponymous province in central Bulgaria. It is located at the southern foot of the Stara Planina mountain range, 230 km east of Sofia. It has a population of 150,000 (1996). It is a key railway hub connecting Ruse, Burgas, Plovdiv, and Sofia, and also has an airport. It is the center of the rose-growing region, and rose oil has been produced there since ancient times. There are factories producing textiles, chemical fertilizers, metallurgy, machinery, electricity, vegetable canning, beer, lumber, and furniture. The city has ancient origins; the Roman Emperor Trajan named it Augusta Trajana, but it fell into decline for a time in late antiquity.

ブルガリア中部の同名州の州都。スターラ･プラニナ山脈の南麓にあり，ソフィアの東230km。人口15万(1996)。ルセ，ブルガス，プロブディフ，ソフィアを結ぶ鉄道の要衝で，空港もある。バラ栽培地帯の中心地で，古くからバラ油が生産されている。繊維，化学肥料，冶金，機械製作，電気，野菜缶詰，ビール，製材，家具の諸工場がある。古い起源をもち，ローマ皇帝トラヤヌスはこの町をアウグスタ･トラヤナAugusta Trajanaと名づけたが，古代末期には一時衰退した。
