Pocket warmer - Kairo

A pocket warmer. It is used when you are cold, and is also used as a method of hot compresses in medical treatments when localized warmth is required, such as for neuralgia or nervous abdominal pain. In the past, pocket warmers were made of heated stones (talc or wax) wrapped in cloth, or boiled konjac. Later, box-shaped pocket warmers that used pocket warmer ash or volatile oil were used, but now, with improvements, simple disposable pocket warmers have become mainstream. There is a demand for thin, flat pocket warmers that fit closely to localized areas, generate heat when shaken or rubbed, or generate heat when applied to localized areas, and are easy for anyone to use, in a variety of sizes and shapes, at low cost. They are used not only in medical and nursing care settings, but also in everyday life and leisure activities.

懐中に入れて暖をとる器具。寒いときに使うほか、医療上では温罨法(おんあんぽう)の一方法として、神経痛や神経性腹痛などのように局所を温める必要がある場合に用いる。懐中に入れて暖をとるものとしては、古くは温石(おんじゃく)といって熱した石（滑石または、ろう石）を布に包んだもの、また、熱く煮たこんにゃくなどが用いられた。その後、懐炉灰や揮発油を用いる箱型懐炉があったが、現在はくふう改良が進められて簡便な使い捨て懐炉が主流になっている。局所に密着するような、薄い平面型で、振る、あるいは揉(も)むことによって発熱するもの、また局所に貼(は)ることによって発熱をおこすものなど、だれでも使いやすく、形状も大小さまざまなものが安価に求められる。医療や介護場面のみでなく、日常生活やレジャー場面でも手軽に多用されている。
