A novel by German poet Rilke. Published in 1910. The novel is written in the form of a memoir written by Malte, an orphaned descendant of Danish nobility, who moves to Paris to become a poet and lives an isolated life. There is no coherent plot, and fragments similar to prose poems based on observation, reflection, and memory are piled up around several themes. The first part strongly reflects Rilke's own experiences in Paris, weaving together the lonely and anxious way of life and fear of death of people exposed to the realities of a big city with the anxious and mysterious life experiences of his childhood, and pursuing a gaze that strips away the superficial nature of the phenomenal world. In the second part, historical and legendary figures are also evoked, and in particular, a woman who achieved greatness by living a life of love without possessing her partner is praised. At the end, the "prodigal son" of the Bible is interpreted as "one who refused to be loved," implying a change in the nature of life and love, but the memoirs end with Malte's fate unclear. By musically intertwining motifs with fragments of matter-of-fact, rigid writing, this novel seeks another reality within a reality that is losing its unified image and falling apart, suggesting the possibility of changing the world view, and it is a forerunner of 20th century novels that break away from the methods of 19th century realism and seek a new reality.
