A vacuum pump that prevents leakage by sealing a small amount of oil in the cylinder of a rotary vacuum pump and forms an oil film between the rotor and the cylinder, thereby achieving a high degree of vacuum. The oil film also acts as a lubricant. There are various types of pumps, such as the Senco type (cam type), the Gaede type (rotor type), and the Kinney type (oscillating piston type). Performance is greatly affected by the vapor pressure of the oil used, so it is necessary to use oil with low vapor pressure and good degassing. Also, if condensable gases such as water vapor are sucked, water will mix with the oil and performance will deteriorate. The ultimate vacuum level is about 10 ^-2 Torr (1 Torr = 133 Pa) for one stage, and most pumps are small. To achieve a higher vacuum, an oil diffusion pump is used, and this pump is also used as a backing pump for that.
