...Born in Alabama. At the age of two, she became blind, deaf, and mute due to an illness, but she overcame her disabilities through the dedicated efforts of her tutor, Anne Sullivan Macy (1866-1936), and her own indomitable independent spirit. After attending the Perkins School for the Blind, she graduated with honors from Radcliffe College in 1904.

Richmond's casework theory is said to be environmentally deterministic, as it was inspired by the educational method used by Anne Sullivan Macy, a tutor for the disabled child Helen Keller, to develop personality by utilizing the social environment, and is contrasted with casework theories that take a psychological standpoint.
