A mountain range that runs east-west through the center of Bulgaria, meaning "old mountain range" in Bulgarian. Commonly known as the Balkan Mountains. Its ancient names include Aemon, Haemus, Haem, Emus, and many others. This mountain range makes up about a quarter of Bulgaria's land area into a plateau, and at the same time divides the country into two climatic zones, the south and the north. It is 530 km long and 15-35 km wide, with its highest peak being Mount Botev (2,376 m). It is a folded mountain range formed in the Mesozoic era, and the peaks have been eroded to form a gently domed ridge. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
