Zudayakushu - Zudayakushu

Japanese: ズダヤクシュ - ずだやくしゅ

A perennial herb of the Saxifragaceae family (illustration) that grows on moist forest floors in deep mountains, such as in temperate beech forests and subalpine coniferous forests. The rhizome is thin, and runners extend underground. There are several basal leaves with long stalks and corniced leaf blades with 3 to 5 shallow lobes. The flower stalk also has 2 to 4 leaves, but the stalk is short. From June to August, a raceme is produced at the end of the flower stalk, and white flowers open slightly downward. The calyx tube is cup-shaped with 5 white calyx lobes and densely covered with glandular hairs on the surface. The petals are also white, 5 needle-shaped, and longer than the calyx lobes. There are 10 stamens that protrude long out from the flower.

温帯のブナ林内や亜高山帯針葉樹林内など，深山の湿った林床にはえるユキノシタ科の多年草（イラスト）。根茎は細く，地下に走出枝を伸ばす。数枚の根生葉があり，柄が長く，葉身は心円形で，浅く3～5裂する。花茎にも2～4枚の葉があるが柄は短い。6～8月，花茎の先に総状花序をつくり，白い花がやや下向きに開く。萼筒は杯状で，萼裂片は5枚，白色，表面に腺毛を密生する。花弁も白色で5枚，針形で，萼裂片より長い。おしべは10本，花外に長くつき出る。
