An epic poem by Italian poet MM Boiardo. It consists of three eight-line poems, but is unfinished (started in 1476, the third volume published in 1495). The author writes that he translated it from the chronicles of Turpin, an archbishop at the court of Emperor Charlemagne, but it is a fictional work. It adds elements of chivalrous courtly love borrowed from Arthurian legend to the heroic tales of Carolingian epics. It is a long work consisting of 69 songs in total, with numerous episodes and a complex structure. However, the main theme is the love story between Orlando, a heroic general in the service of Charlemagne, and Angelica, princess of Cataio, a pagan country in the east.
