His real surname was Fujiwara. He ruled Tanuma, Aso County, Shimotsuke Province, and is said to have taken the name Tanuma during the time of Shigetsuna. Later he changed his surname to Minamoto, and during the time of Tadayoshi he moved to Shinano Province, and during the time of Yoshitsugu he served Tokugawa Yorinobu. When Tokugawa Yoshimune entered the country from Kii and became Shogun, Okiyuki accompanied him to Edo Castle. From then on he became a Hatamoto (a vassal of a shogun), and was promoted to Jugo no Ge (Junior Fifth Rank), and then to Oden no Kashira (Lower Lord). His son Okitsugu served Shogun Ieshige and then Ieharu, and in 1758 he became a daimyo, and in 1772 he became a chamberlain and then a senior councilor, and wielded great power with his fief of 57,000 koku in Sagara, Totomi Province. His son Okitsugu also became a young councilor, but after he was killed in the palace in 1784, his fief was gradually reduced, and in 1787, during the time of Okiaki, he was given a fief of 10,000 koku in Shimomura, Mutsu Province. Later, Yoshimasa was appointed as a young councilor and in 1823 he was again appointed to Sagara, but in 1868 he moved to Kokubo in Kazusa Province and was made a viscount.

本姓は藤原。下野国安蘇郡田沼を領し，重綱のとき，田沼氏を称したという。のち源姓に改め，忠吉のとき信濃国に移り，吉次のとき徳川頼宣に仕えた。徳川吉宗が紀伊から入って将軍になるに及び，意行は供奉して江戸城に入った。以来，旗本となり，従五位下，主殿頭に累進。子の意次は，将軍家重，次いで家治に仕え，宝暦8 (1758) 年大名となり，側用人を経て安永1 (72) 年老中となり，遠江相良5万 7000石を領して，権勢をふるった。子の意知も若年寄に進んだが，天明4 (84) 年殿中で斬られて以来，漸次封を減じられ，同7年意明のとき，陸奥国下村1万石に封じられた。のち，意正は若年寄に任じられ，文政6 (1823) 年再び相良に入封したが，明治1 (68) 年上総国小久保に移り，子爵に叙せられた。
