Suzuka Mountains

A mountain range stretching approximately 55 km north to south and 10 km east to west that forms the border between Shiga Prefecture and Mie and Gifu Prefectures. It is also called the Suzuka Mountains or the Hokusei Alps. It is mainly composed of sandstone and tuff from the Chichibu Mesozoic and Paleozoic formations, with some granite and limestone. The eastern part is dominated by steep cliffs, while the western part is a gently sloping landform. As a result, short, rapid rivers form alluvial fans in the east, while in the west, rivers flow through long tributaries, and multipurpose dams have been built on the Yasu River, Hino River, Aichi River, and Inukami River. The highest peak is Mount Oike (1,247 meters) in the north, and other peaks include Mount Gozaisho (1,212 meters), Mount Shaka (1,092 meters), Mount Ryugatake (1,100 meters), Mount Fujiwara (1,120 meters), Mount Suzugatake (1,130 meters), Mount Ryozen (1,094 meters), and Mount Kamagatake (1,161 meters). The limestone area in the north is known as the Omi Karst, with the Kawachi and Same wind holes. The granite area around Mount Gozaisho in the southeast is full of huge, strangely shaped rocks, and Mount Tounaiheki is used for rock climbing. The main part of the mountain range is designated as Suzuka Quasi-National Park, and many tourists use the ropeway and Suzuka Skyline that connect the Yunoyama Onsen at the foot of the mountain to the summit.

Mount Gozaisho
The main peak (1212m above sea level) in the Suzuka Mountains, which forms the center of Suzuka Quasi-National Park. It is also called Mt. Gozaisho. The area near the summit has been developed as a mountain park, and a ropeway runs from the base of the mountain, covering a total length of 2161m and a difference in elevation of 780m. A 1,120m high mountain in the northern part of the Suzuka Mountains. It is part of Suzuka Quasi-National Park. It is a treasure trove of alpine plants and is known as one of the mountains with the most flowers in Japan. 滋賀県と三重県・岐阜県の境界をなす南北約55キロメートル、東西約10キロメートルの山脈。鈴鹿山地、北勢(ほくせい)アルプスともいう。秩父中・古生層の砂岩、凝灰岩が主で、一部花崗(かこう)岩、石灰岩が含まれる。東部の急崖(きゅうがい)に対して西部は緩傾斜の地塁山地であり、このため、東部では短小急流な河川が扇状地を形成、西部では河川流路が長い支谷を通り、野洲(やす)川、日野川、愛知(えち)川、犬上(いぬかみ)川には多目的のダムが建設されている。最高峰は北部の御池岳(おいけがたけ)（1247メートル）で、ほかに御在所(ございしょ)山（1212メートル）、釈迦(しゃか)ヶ岳（1092メートル）、竜ヶ岳（1100メートル）、藤原岳（1120メートル）、鈴ヶ岳（1130メートル）、霊仙(りょうぜん)山（1094メートル）、鎌(かま)ヶ岳（1161メートル）などがある。北部の石灰岩地帯には河内(かわち)や佐目(さめ)の風穴があり「近江(おうみ)カルスト」の名で知られる。また南東部の御在所山付近の花崗岩地帯は巨大な奇岩が多く、藤内壁(とうないへき)などはロッククライミングに利用される。山脈の主要部は鈴鹿国定公園に指定され、山麓(さんろく)の湯の山温泉と山頂を結ぶロープウェーや鈴鹿スカイラインなどを利用した観光客が多い。
